Workforce development took the national stage in Cabell County as U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon toured the Woody Williams Center for Advanced Learning and Careers in Barboursville.

The state-of-the-art Career and Technical Education center is preparing both high school and adult learners for careers in skilled trades and technical fields, with programs including automotive technology, welding, carpentry, electrical technology, health sciences, cosmetology, masonry and more.

During the visit, students showcased the Center’s hands-on approach to education and workforce preparation. Students can graduate with industry-recognized credentials, including OSHA 10 safety certification, giving them valuable skills as they prepare to enter the workforce.

The visit also highlighted a challenge facing employers across the country: the growing need for skilled workers as experienced employees retire and fewer workers enter many of the trades.

For West Virginia and the PAZ region, facilities like the Woody Williams Center represent an important piece of the economic development puzzle — building a skilled workforce here at home to support existing employers and help attract future investment.

That’s workforce development in action — and it’s happening right here in the PAZ region.
