POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. — A new artificial intelligence computing campus planned for Mason County could become one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the world following a partnership between technology companies Nscale, Microsoft and NVIDIA.

Nscale announced on Monday that it has signed a letter of intent with Microsoft to provide 1.35 gigawatts of AI compute capacity at the planned West Virginia Monarch AI Campus. The facility will serve as a flagship deployment of NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin GPUs, operating as Vera Rubin NVL72 systems engineered using the NVIDIA Vera Rubin DSX AI Factory reference design.

“This is another major vote of confidence in West Virginia’s future,” Gov. Patrick Morrisey said in a statement following Monday’s announcement. “A decision to expand the Monarch Compute Campus shows that our state is becoming a destination for the industries that will drive the next generation of economic growth.

“Our Microgrid legislation (HB 2014), along with our 50 by 50 energy strategy to raise West Virginia’s power capacity to 50 gigawatts by the year 2050, ensures that West Virginia will have the power capacity needed to support massive projects like artificial intelligence and advanced computing. When companies are looking for reliable energy, skilled workers, and a pro-growth environment, West Virginia is increasingly at the top of the list.
